Signet Breeding Services provides genetic evaluations to livestock producers to help them identify sheep and cattle with superior breeding potential.

The performance recording and measurement services delivered by Signet enable the industry to capitalise on genetic improvement to improve the efficiency and quality of British livestock production.

Genetic improvement has a massive impact on livestock production:

  • Improving growth and carcase traits
  • Increasing maternal efficiency
  • Enhancing animal welfare
  • Reducing the carbon footprint of ruminant production

The annual return from genetic improvement within the British beef and sheep sector will exceed £15.5 million in 2015. This value has been generated from a review carried out by AbacusBio on behalf of AHDB on genetic improvement of beef cattle and sheep in the UK. Read the full report here.

Signet is part of AHDB Beef and Lamb the industry body for beef and lamb levy-payers in England. AHDB Beef and Lamb is a division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

Financial support for the production of evaluations is provided by AHDB Beef and Lamb in England, HCC in Wales and QMS in Scotland.

Genetic analyses are provided to Signet by EGENES.
