AHDB are keen to support breeders that wish to breed sheep that are more resistant/resilient to gastrointestinal parasites. In recent years we have invested in research to look at the genetic influences on these traits and invested over £12,500 per annum in the collection of measurements.
However, due to budgetary constraints across AHDB’s programme of research activity, we are having to reduce the funding that is available to individual breeders for the pump priming of measurement collection. In 2019, AHDB won’t be providing funding for FEC sampling.
AHDB will continue to provide support for the collection of IgA measurements, currently £1/sample for every record linked to the Signet database. This is not a reflection of the value of one measure over the other, it is simply a continuation of support to build the IgA dataset to enable us to determine its true value to industry.
We realise this news will be disappointing for breeders that have chosen to sample large numbers of lambs in the past and may now do much smaller numbers of lambs in the future.
We have informed Eurion Thomas at Techion (email: [email protected]), as one of the providers of FEC data from breeders to Signet, so that he is aware of these changes to funding arrangements.
