Evaluation of the data to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) is carried out at different times for different breeds. The nine EBVs produced are estimates of the animal’s genetic worth and can be compared with the EBVs of all other recorded cattle of the same breed in the UK. The two economic indexes – Beef Value and Calving Value, together provide an assessment of the overall genetic merit of the animal.

The breed averages are calculated on an annual basis and can be used as a guide for pedigree breeders and commercial buyers to judge the merit of an individual animal. In addition one of the advantages of BLUP analysis is that it allows genetic trends to be monitored over time.
