Saturday 7th April saw the first ram sale of 2018 at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on behalf of The Centurion Group of Poll Dorset Breeders.

The sale offered 47 MV accredited, Signet recorded Poll Dorset breeding ewes and rams.

The sale was preceded by the “Selection Day event” when the best ram presented is chosen by secret ballot. Signet manage this for the Group. It used to be that this ram was then “bought” as the Group Reference Sire and semen from it used across all members flocks. Most recently the rams are put up for sale by auction to all at the day.

Lot 510, a Sherborne ram lamb with a top 5% terminal index from Robert Hole (990:A4683) was chosen as the Centurion Ram of the Year. Out of a Sherborne ewe and Blackdown Wizard, he beat a Poorton ram lamb (359:A0396) from Francis Fooks and Huish Alfie (A26:A14051) from David Rossiter who placed second and third respectively.

Top prices of the day went to the Rossiter family with Huish Arthur (A26:A14305), having both a terminal and maternal index in the top 5% of the breed, making 780gns. Huish Alfie (A26:A14051), who placed in the Centurion Ram of the Year sold for 750gns.

Nearly half the rams available for sale had a terminal index in the top 5% of the breed indicating the shear quality that the Centurion group have available for sale. These high index rams sold at a clearance rate over 10% higher than the sale average with a price premium.

The sale was the first to use the new Top 5% Identifier tags in the Signet “Seek the Standard” range with many breeders taking advantage both before and during the sale.

The group are looking forward to one of the key sales of the year, the May Sheep Fair held at Exeter Livestock Centre 8th – 9th May 2018. Signet staff will be in attendance to talk about the benefits of performance recording your flock so please come and say hello.

We look forward to seeing you there.
