Winner of the Wiltshire Horn, Jean Burke, Ventonglidder Flock.
The 2017 winner of the AHDB Beef & Lamb Better Returns Programme Improved Flock Award for Wiltshire Horn sheep is the flock owned by Jean and Eddie Burke, from the Ventonglidder Flock in Truro, Cornwall. This award is presented to the English Signet performance recorded flock that makes the greatest improvement in the breeding potential of the lamb crop during the previous year.
This is an extremely fitting award, given Jean’s active involvement in supporting the Wiltshire Horn breeding group over recent years; pulling breeders together and finding funding to support progressive breeding strategies. At the end of 2016 Jean and Eddie decided to sell their farm and disperse their Wiltshire Horn flock, so many of the Ventonglidder genetics will continue to contribute to the advancement of the breed in years to come. In keeping with Jean’s generous spirit, she has asked for her winner’s cheque to be redirected to support recording Wiltshire Horn breeders and this will be done over coming months.
Jean would like to thank Sam and all the staff at Signet Breeding Services for all their help over the years. A further thankyou to the Wiltshire Horn Societies Signet Breeders group for all their support and she wishes them all the best for the future. She also thanks them for continuing to fly the flag for performance recording. Jean says that she would strongly recommend using Signet Breeding Service to anyone.
