With the assistance of the BLUP analysis method, genetic progress over time can now be measured within both Sire Reference Schemes and individual Sheep breeder flocks recording on a within-flock basis.

Each Sire Reference Scheme has been allocated a scheme index of 100 points as representing the average genetic value of the lamb crop in the first year of recording as a group, e.g. 1990 for the Suffolks and Charollais, 1992 for the Texels with a standard deviation being set at 40 points.

Terminal Sire Breeds

With the breeding objective of these schemes focused upon higher growth rates, improved carcase muscling and lower fat levels, the scheme index shown for these groups comprises weight, muscle and fat measurements, weighted according to their relative economic values. Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are also provided to indicate the exact nature of the progress being made.
